“(for Freight) Freight trains crisscross the continent bearing goods, materials, and messages—signals read as symbols, surfaces, and textures.”

Trains crisscrossing the continent bear goods and materials from field to port; but they carry messages too. Captured furtively in a rainstorm, this film explores those signals as symbols, surfaces, textures. Like Elizabeth Cotten’s “Freight Train” manipulated to create this film’s soundtrack, we might imagine what a freight train is, where it goes and what it might carry with it.

M_obile
a short film by Lawrence Bird
8:40 | Experimental | Colour, B&W | January 2024
Language: English

“What is hunted, what is found, in the gap between now and then?”

M_obile replays and rearranges eight sequences from Fritz Lang’s “M” (1931), recording them on a cell phone as they play back on a malfunctioning computer monitor. The broken monitor superimposes successive frames, rendering two distinct frameworks: the moving body, dissolving, fluid; and its material frame, architecture, super-solid. What if these sequences, these fragments of story, are then re-arranged? Who is hunting who, who is caught, who is judged, who is finally imprisoned?
