The Winnipeg Film Group (WFG) is pleased to announce the acquisition of a state-of-the-art Lasergraphics Archivist film scanner, funded through the Community Services Recovery Fund from the Government of Canada. This significant development enables WFG to provide high-resolution scanning services for 16mm, Super 8mm, and 8mm films to its membership and the general public. Additionally, the WFG will be scanning its extensive film catalog for preservation, to increase public access to, and awareness of the rich film history in the WFG vault, ensuring these films and filmmakers are not forgotten. This fund will support our capacity to keep and preserve our film heritage and simultaneously serve the filmmaking community with scanning services to promote hybrid analog and digital filmmaking processes.
The Community Services Recovery Fund is a strategic response to what charities and non-profits need right now, helping organizations adapt to the long-term impacts of the pandemic. The Fund is not merely a financial safety net but a lifeline that fosters innovation and growth.
For the WFG, the acquisition of the Lasergraphics Archivist scanner represents a critical step in recovery and adaptation post-pandemic. This technology will be a pivotal asset to filmmakers, historians, and archives that require film scanning services in the Prairie region.
By enhancing our ability to preserve and share Manitoba’s rich film history, this investment aligns with the WFG’s ongoing commitment to promote the art of moving image and the continued use of analog film. The funding from the Community Services Recovery Fund ensures that WFG can continue to thrive and adapt to the demands of a post-pandemic world, offering vital resources and services that cater to the unique needs of our membership and the broader community.
The Winnipeg Film Group extends its profound gratitude to the Government of Canada for this essential support. The Community Services Recovery Fund is being delivered through three National Funders – Canadian Red Cross, Community Foundations of Canada, and United Way Centraide Canada.
This is a new chapter in our story, and we are eager to write it together with our members, supporters, and the rich tapestry of filmmakers and film lovers in Manitoba.
Stay tuned for updates this Fall when we announce the commencement of film scanning services for the WFG membership and general public.
