The Winnipeg Film Group Board of Directors is pleased to announce and welcome back Ivan Hughes, as the new Executive Director. Ivan brings 15+ years of business management and is an experienced leader with strong interpersonal skills including consensus building, negotiation, communication, and board experience.
As Executive Director, Ivan will be responsible for managing the overall operations and staff of the Winnipeg Film Group. He’ll serve as the main spokesperson and will represent the organization in all professional business capacities. One of Ivan’s strengths is having strong relationships with the film industry, funding bodies, and government.
Ivan is an independent filmmaker with more than 20 years of experience working on documentary film projects across Canada and around the world. His award-winning work has screened nationally and internationally in festivals, broadcast and online. He brings technical knowledge of workflows and equipment to projects whether he is directing, shooting, or editing. Ivan has worked on outreach programs across the province bringing filmmaking workshops to remote indigenous communities, he has mentored new filmmakers, he founded Squamish Mountain Festival in 2006, and was a board member and programming manager for the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival for 5 years. Ivan has previously worked at the Winnipeg Film Group as the Production Centre Director form 2012 – 2014. He knows the community well already but is excited to connect more with members.
Ivan is committed to helping the Winnipeg Film Group continue to grow as a world class film centre in Manitoba that supports independent filmmakers, engages the community, and expands the appreciation of independent cinema in the community. He is dedicated to creating a work environment that is inclusive, respectful, and based on kindness.
His first official day was April 4, 2022. He’ll host meetings with staff, stakeholders, and community members over the next few months to officially introduce himself.
It’s always difficult to move into a new leadership position. We have a good feeling that Ivan will do a fantastic job of guiding the Winnipeg Film Group on the right path.
