Manitoba directors are invited to be a part of an exciting initiative in which the Canada Council for the Arts and the Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA) come together to honour the 2017 recipients of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts Awards (GGAVMA).
We are looking to pair directors with the 2017 GGAVMA winners to create artistic three-minute video portraits. The commissioned directors will be acknowledged in every way possible as creators of these videos. The video portraits will be shown on Council’s web site and YouTube channel. They will also be shown on partners’ websites and at public events organized by the National Gallery of Canada and the Office of the Governor General of Canada. The commissioned directors and IMAA members are also encouraged to show the works on their websites and social media channels.
Each video is to be an artistic portrait of the recipient, in which the commissioned artist has complete creative control. Please consult the proposal form for more details or consult the Council’s website

Treaty Number Three by Danielle Sturk 4:18 | Documentary | Colour | March 2013 Danielle Sturk produced a unique video portrait of visual and performance artist Rebecca Belmore, 2013 Laureate of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts. The filmmaker collaborated with Belmore who created a new visual art/performance artwork specifically for this video.
