APTN Paid Internship Program – Ongoing deadline

f you are interested in gaining practical work experience that will expose you to the real world of television broadcasting in a fast paced news reporting setting, then APTN’s Internship Program is for you! You’ll have the opportunity to put what you’ve learned into practice, build your contact list and further develop the skills necessary to have a successful career in television broadcasting.

As one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and Manitoba’s Top 25 Employers, APTN is proud to play an important role in supporting the development and future careers of Indigenous students in the television broadcasting industry.

Eligibility criteria
• Be a First Nations, Inuit or Métis permanent resident of Canada;
• Have a desire to follow a career path in the television broadcast industry;
• Must be enrolled in a post-secondary Journalism or Television Broadcasting Program at an accredited Canadian institution, preferably in the final year of studies;
• Commit to a defined timeframe on a full time basis at APTN.

This position is paid and may potentially lead to continued employment at APTN.

Indigenous Screen Office – New Media Program – DUE March 1, 2023

This program provides support to Indigenous screen-based content creators for the production of New Media projects. Applicants to this program may undertake project work in the Production of high calibre ​​game design, AR/VR/XR, apps, podcasts and narrative audio/visual immersive projects. We encourage ISO applicants to this program to access this funding for activities during the production phase that will ensure a strong project, including fees for the project team and technology costs, Cultural Advisors/Knowledge Carriers, community liaisons, and/or legal advice.

Indigenous Screen Office – Sector Development Grant DUE March 1, 2023

This program recognizes that training, skills building, professional development, and sectoral capacity building are critical to ensuring the continued momentum and sustainability for the Indigenous screen sector.  This program was created to support project-based activities that will contribute towards building a robust Indigenous screen sector for creators, crew and professional workers through a variety of opportunities. Initiatives supported through this program may include:

  • Youth programs in screen-based media;
  • Labs, workshops, training initiatives, conferences, festivals and events;
  • Services, programs or projects that address sectoral gaps;
  • Innovative strategies to support Indigenous screen creators and industry professionals;
  • Community centered initiatives that aim to develop emerging talent in screen-based media;
  • Production training programs that will support the career development of at least four Indigenous creators, crew members or workers;
  • Special initiatives that build the profile for the Indigenous screen sector nationally or internationally.

Indigenous Screen Office – Travel Funding – DUE March 1, 2023

The ISO is offering Travel Funding to support Indigenous screen-based creatives for activities that require travel including festival and market attendance, conferences, community engagement, training opportunities, and artistic screen-based collaboration across Canada and internationally.

This funding is designed for:

  • Indigenous individuals who have a track record of working in screen-based content whose career and professional network would benefit from the proposed travel;
  • Emerging talent who can leverage a festival/conference/workshop into new learning opportunities, experiences, or professional development;
  • Established Indigenous screen-based creators and Indigenous-owned production companies who are executing an international, or new market strategy, and whose business would benefit from the proposed activities.

The Small-Scale Activities component of Creating, Knowing and Sharing funds activities that will advance your artistic career or practice. This may include acquiring materials for artistic production, engaging in career or artistic development activities or benefitting from specific expertise, advice or training from a professional artist or cultural carrier. This component is open to First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals, artistic groups, collectives and organizations working in all disciplines.

First-time applicants are strongly encouraged to speak to a Program Officer before applying.

Sundance Native Filmmakers Lab Online & Santa Fe, NM

The Indigenous Program has built and sustained an Indigenous film circle, which now spans over three generations. The cycle of work begins by scouting for and identifying indigenous artists, bringing them through the mechanisms of support at Sundance Institute to get their work made and shown, then bringing the filmmakers and their work back to native lands. The Native Filmmakers Lab has been a vital part of supporting indigenous filmmakers since 2004.

The lab focuses on the specific development of storytellers from Native and Indigenous backgrounds, encompassing feature film and episodic work. During the Lab, Fellows will hone their storytelling and technical skills in a hands-on and supportive environment, including one-on-one feedback sessions with advisors and roundtable discussions. With Fellows working across both feature and episodic formats, they will also explore and discuss indigenizing their creative practices in regard to writing their scripts.

Two types of grants are available, depending on an artist’s level of accomplishment and experience in the discipline of the proposed project.  The Grant amounts are as follows:
(A) grant of up to $7,000 for mid-career and established artists
(B) grant of up to $3,000 for emerging artists.
