GOVERNOR GENERAL AWARD VIDEOS CREATED BY WFG MEMBERS

Mar 12, 2013

Artist profile videos by Winnipeg Film Group filmmakers Danielle Sturk and Mike Maryniuk feature Governor General Award winners

The Canada Council for the Arts announced today the winners of the 2013?Governor?General?s Awards in Visual and Media Arts at the Cin?math?que qu?b?coise in Montreal. ?For the first time, in partnership with the Independent Media Arts Alliance, the Canada Council commissioned filmmakers to create short video profiles of each Award recipient that are featured on the Canada Council website.

The Winnipeg Film is proud to have supported our members, Danielle Sturk and Mike Maryniuk, in the production of two of these?profile videos. ?Danielle Sturk created a video portrait of visual artist Rebecca Belmore and Mike Maryniuk created a video portrait of artist and potter Greg Payce.

Rebecca Belmore is an Anishinaabe-Canadian artist based in Vancouver. Her work addresses history, voice and voicelessness, place, and identity through the media of sculpture, installation, video and performance. Danielle Sturk?s portrait of Rebecca is a beautiful piece of work itself. It utilizes stunning imagery and a wonderfully haunting score to create a moving, emotional and captivating look at the artist.

Greg Payce has been making ceramics for over 35 years. Lately he has collaborated with composers and photographers to produce videos which animate the negative spaces between his ceramic forms. Mike Maryniuk?s video portrait plays with these same concepts as he introduces the viewer to the artist?s work. The result is a creative blend of video and animation that honours the vision of the artist it portrays.

The Awards, funded and administered by the Canada Council for the Arts, are in their 14th year and recognize distinguished career achievements in the visual and media arts by Canadian artists, as well as outstanding contributions through voluntarism, philanthropy, board governance, community outreach or professional activities.
