In this two day workshop, you will learn the following:
-Our human eye remade
The basic parts of a motion picture camera
-Setting out to tell a story
The choices a cinematographer makes vs. the choices a still photographer makes
-F stop numbers
What they are and the multiple ways to use them
-Focal lengths
Compose your shot by selecting the right lens
-Aperture
Perfect your shot composition by choosing your depth of field DOF.
-ND filters and polarizers
restrict the light entering your lens to maintain your composition.
-ISO
From monochrome film stock to colour CMOS sensors: capturing the moving image.
-Shutter angle
Decide how smooth or choppy the motion in your scene appears by
selecting your shutter angle.
-Colour
How we perceive colour vs. how a camera perceives colour
-Light
Stops, F-stops, and foot-candles. Measuring and dealing with light.
Goals
-To gain a de-jargonized understanding of motion picture cameras
-Know how to configure your camera settings to create the look you desire.
-Learn to measure light as though you were shooting film stock.
-Gain a basic grasp of controlling light in your composition.
-Telling your story without camera companies draining your wallet.
-Learn how to make a still camera work the way a motion picture camera does.
Dan is a videographer, camera assistant, filmmaker and technical
director based in Winnipeg.
Dan is a graduate of the filmmaking program at New York Film Academy in
L.A. and before then 3D animation at Red River college in Winnipeg.
An expert in the Maya Animation software, Dan has taught many 3D
animation classes. Being an industry participant during the transition
between analog to fully digital production workflows, Dan has created
footage on every kind of media.
Dan has worked on Independent productions and TV commercials as a camera
operator, focus puller, animator and VFX consultant.
A continuing student of Physics and Astronomy at U of M and an avid
Astro-photographer, Dan enjoys exploring and communicating the nature of
light and image creation as well as engaging in astronomy outreach at
public events.
Dan has since returned to smaller independent productions in pursuit of
creating a feature film while passing on what he enjoys about cinema, as
well as helping to empower new filmmakers in the digital age.

The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.
