Independent Documentary Fundamentals

A frank discussion about the process of directing and producing independent low budget documentaries. This two-day workshop offers practical suggestions on the phases of documentary production with examples of how to overcome obstacles to launching a project and seeing it through to completion. The workshop covers: how to develop an idea and find potential funding; considering schedules, crew and gear needs; approaches to production, locations, and participants; and navigating post-production and marketing strategies.
About the Instructor
Kevin Nikkel is a Winnipeg based filmmaker, writer, and programmer with over two decades of experience in documentary film. His documentaries have reached audiences internationally at festivals, on television, and on the web. He has produced oral histories on the Winnipeg Film Group and Winnipeg Folk Festival. His latest documentary “The Mission” for CBC’s Absolutely Manitoba premiered in August 2026.
