A. Rimbaud screening at DBC
Following the Masterclass, there will be a 7:15pm screening of Wang’s latest film A. Rimbaud at the Dave Barber Cinematheque followed by a Q&A with the director (tickets available through the DBC box office).
Patrick Wang was born in Texas, the son of Taiwanese immigrants. He graduated from MIT with a degree in economics and music and theater arts. He has studied game theory, health policy, and income inequality at the Federal Reserve, the Harvard School for Public Health, and other organizations. He is author of the books The Monologue Plays and Post Script, an interactive book about the making of The Grief of Others.
His first film In the Family was hailed “an indie masterpiece” by Roger Ebert. His second film, The Grief of Others, premiered to critical acclaim at SXSW and Cannes. A Bread Factory, was called “a major new work by a singular American artist,” by The New York Times.
Wang’s latest film A. Rimbaud was described as “poetic, audacious and singular…an extraordinary achievement.” by Sight and Sound. Notably, production took place here in Winnipeg in the fall of 2024, co-produced by Thin Stuff Productions with a crew of local talent with support from MFM.

RIMBAUD wasn’t just another Hollywood service shoot passing through town to use our tax credits—it was a true creative partnership co-produced by Winnipeg’s own Thin Stuff Productions (Fritzi Adelman and dynamic-duo Even + Galen Johnson; key creatives known for their iconic work with Guy Maddin).
Supported by Manitoba Film & Music (MFM) this 3-hour feature was brought to life on local soundstages by a stacked team of Prairie technicians, craftspeople, and local musicians. Wang’s arrival in Winnipeg represents a natural collision between one of American indie cinema’s most unique voices and our city’s deep tradition of hand-crafted film art.
