HOURS: 10 hours per week

WAGE: $19.69/hour + vacation pay

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Winnipeg Film Group is seeking a Short Film Programming Assistant for an in-person 17-week term. This position is unionized and covered under the WFG’s Collective Agreement with IATSE Local 63. It is classified as a Term position.

Reporting to the Film Programmer, the Short Film Programming Assistant will be responsible for  assisting with the screening and organizing of the short film submissions for the 2026 Gimme Some Truth Documentary Festival, November 5 – 8, 2026.

The Short Film Programming Assistant will support the Film Programmer in managing film submissions, festival curation, and filmmaker experience. This role works closely with the Film Programmer and offers a fantastic opportunity to learn while contributing to the successful execution of the GST festival’s film programming and the achievement of its artistic vision.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Pre-screening of short film submissions under the direction of the Film Programmer.
  • Screen short films submitted through JotForm to assist in the assessment process.
  • Evaluating the films based on assessment criteria and recommend them for consideration by the Film Programmer.
  • Source potential short films and filmmakers that align with the festival’s mission.
  • Program and introduce one short film program during the festival, and moderate the Q&A with the filmmakers.
  • Assist the Film Programmer with filmmaker communication, providing timely updates on submission status, selection, and screening details.
  • Assist with inviting, scheduling, and providing logistics for guest filmmakers including travel and accommodations.
  • Assist the Film Programmer with preparing festival materials, including copy and images for programs and promotional content.
  • Prepare post-festival reports to assess outcomes and guide future planning.
  • Assist the Film Programmer with collecting invoices from distributors, artists, and other suppliers.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous experience in film festival programming, event coordination, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience with artist-run centres, not-for-profit, cultural, or arts-based organizations is a strong asset.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines and prioritize tasks efficiently.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; must be comfortable interacting with filmmakers, industry professionals, and festival guests both online and in-person.
  • Proficiency with Google Suite (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Gmail) and Outlook  is required.
  • Familiarity with online submission platforms is a strong asset.
  • A passion for independent film and a commitment to supporting filmmakers and diverse voices in cinema.
  • Ability to handle unexpected challenges with professionalism and creativity.
  • Applicants must be able to work on-site at the Winnipeg Film Group.
