OVERVIEW

The Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF) is seeking a visionary and passionate Head of Programming to curate and lead the strategic artistic direction of the festival as it embarks on its 24th year. The Head of Programming will lead our film programming team during the annual process of selecting films, developing innovative and thoughtfully curated film series and special events. The Head of Programming will report to the Executive Director and will work closely with the Programming Committee, led by the elected Board Programming Chair who provides overall guidance.

ABOUT GIFF

The Gimli International Film Festival is Manitoba’s premier film festival, and the largest rural film festival in Canada. We show the best contemporary cinema from Manitoba, Canada and around the world. This includes narrative and documentary, live action and animated, in short, mid-length, and feature film formats from across the globe. Our festival takes place annually on the last weekend of July (from Wednesday evening to Sunday night) in the lakeside community of Gimli. We screen over 100 films and provide our patrons with post-screening Q&As, industry sessions, and networking events, all while enjoying the natural beauty of the Interlake region. We value our artists and are committed to paying standard rate screening fees as outlined in the IMAA Fee Schedule.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Are you our ideal candidate? We are looking for an individual who possesses:

– A substantial knowledge and passion for films, filmmaking, independent film movements and the networks that support it.

– Significant curating and programming experience.

– Knowledge of new, emerging, mid-career and established content creators.

– Ability to establish relationships with film distributors and sales agents.

– Excellent written and verbal communication skills

– A record as a proven multitasker capable of juggling numerous and distinct priorities and relationships

– Understanding and working within a budget

– Deep understanding of curation process and how it relates to strict timelines

– Excellent ability to lead a team of programmers and ensure all administration is completed in a timely manner.

– Proven ability to cultivate and support the organization’s artistic goals and priorities.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

– Establishing a shared artistic vision, curatorial direction, and strategic direction for all aspects of the organization’s film programming.

– Work with the programming team to develop a programming plan that incorporates film screenings, special events, co-productions, guest-hosted programs, etc., alongside the vision for the five-day festival.

– Maintain budget and foster fiscal responsibility (manage filmmaker payments, etc.)

– Ensure all administration is done in a timely and organized fashion including securing film materials, planning Q&As, confirming film guests, managing question writing.

– Develop processes and procedures.

– Direct Reports include Contract Programming Coordinators (Features, Shorts, Documentaries), Seasonal Technical Production Coordinator, and 5 Projectionists (During festival).

QUALIFICATIONS

– Minimum of 2 years in management role; International experience is preferred but not mandatory.

– Demonstrated experience in planning, organizing, and directing the artistic aspects of a large-scale production.

– Strong interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).

– Proven ability to manage a budget dependably and provide clear financial analysis with respect to project costs and revenue potential.

– Proficiency in MS Office including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat

– Understanding of film festival platforms like FilmFreeway, Eventive.

SALARY INFORMATION

This is a casual contract position with a pay (based on experience) starting at $20,000.00.
