TIFF & WFG PRESENT:  “THE 48”, A 6-Year Retrospective at TIFF Bell Light Box 2020

Jan 20, 2020

 “THE 48”

A 6-Year Retrospective

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 20, 2020: The Winnipeg Film Group (WFG) has partnered with TIFF to present “THE 48”, a 6-Year Retrospective” which will screen next month at the TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto at 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 27, 2020, curated by Ben Williams, Director for Development and Marketing at the Winnipeg Film Group. Come experience this collection of works from a new wave of emerging Winnipeg independent filmmakers. This screening will also be the announcement and launch of a national filmmaking initiative in 2021.

Since 2014, the WFG has hosted their unique version of the 48 Hour Film Contest (The 48) in which submissions, audiences and artistic quality has grown exponentially with each successive year. 48 Hour Film Challenges have been held for 20+ years in various cities across the globe, where participants write, shoot, edit, score and deliver original short films in two days, however, none can match the style, humour and occasionally downright audacious perspective as those generated in Winnipeg.

Generously supported by Winnipeg’s film industry, local businesses, the WFG and the local film community, some of the films have had great success with spring-boarding its filmmakers to bigger projects, national/international screenings and elevating their careers. This 6-year retrospective condenses 144 films down to 19 of some of the more notable and memorable works by rising talent in Manitoba.

Congrats to all the filmmakers below who will screen in Toronto. A new generation of vibrant young filmmakers, all of whom have been influenced by and borne out of a historic tradition of independence by the likes of WFG stalwarts Guy Maddin, John Paizs, Shelagh Carter, and recent 2019 TIFF prize winner Matthew Rankin.
