New 4K restoration courtesy of Janus Films. Czech New Wave iconoclast Juraj Herz’s terrifying, darkly comic vision of the horrors of the Nazi racial ideology. Karel Kopfrkingl, (the chilling Rudolf Hrušínský) a crematorium director in 1930s Prague, believes that death offers the only true relief from human suffering. Recruited by the Nazis, Kopfrkingl’s increasingly deranged worldview drives him to formulate his own shocking Final Solution. Blending the blackest of gallows humor with disorienting expressionistic flourishes, Herz’s long-banned masterpiece stands as one of cinema’s most disturbing portraits of evil.
Restoration Tuesdays: our new ongoing series of newly restored films is generously sponsored by IATSE 856. All admissions to these screenings is $5.
