An estimated one million migratory birds slam into Toronto’s glass buildings every year. Bird City Lights follows a day in the life of a bird rescuer as she scours the sidewalks, nooks and crannies of the financial district for fallen birds in the early hours of the morning. The film offers a rare glimpse into…

PS Kensington

By Dan Browne | 00:02:35 | Documentary, Experimental | 17/08/2005

One of my first experiments with time-lapse, a roll of Super 8 shot during a Pedestrian Sunday in Kensington Market. I moved into 258 Augusta Ave. in 2002, and the next year my neighbours at La Palette started the PS Kensington initiative, which has continued ever since. My house had a patio door that opened…

Andy is a young Métis woman living in a big city. When a friend invites Andy to accompany her to a large city park where she introduces Andy to sweet grass, it sparks a night of interpersonal exploration and self-discovery, ultimately reconnecting Andy with her Indigenous roots.

Souvenirs

By Paula Kelly | 00:22:30 | Documentary | 01/01/2008

Souvenirs is a trio of short films about the city of Winnipeg, which sift through the accumulated layers of history, experience and identity of a place which we, collectively, call home. • Sand and Stone (6:00) digs up the history of hard labour and the urban landscape—the workers who sweated its surfaces and shapes, and the…

Riff Raff

By Rob Haacke | 00:03:00 | Experimental | 1/2/2004

Riff Raff is a real life glimpse of city panhandlers and the lives they lead. This hand-processed film presents rough urban outcasts in a distinctly luminous style.

Auto Disintegrate

By Adriene Wyse | 00:08:30 | Drama, Narrative-Fiction | 1/3/2004

Dora walks alone through an impersonal city that moves to the beat of traffic lights and the ring of isolating cell phones. A flirtation with death results in a campy musical dream where perfect strangers offer advice to reconnect with a personable reality.

Zwei Indianer Aus Winnipeg

By Darryl Nepinak | 00:02:40 | Comedy, Narrative-Fiction | 01/10/2008

Two ersatz “Indian warriors” chase a beautiful Indian maiden through the streets of Winnipeg but she loves Chief Big Bear. Who is the hunter, and who the hunted in this tableau? Based on the 1964 German song, “Zwei Indianer Aus Winnipeg,” our heroes are in for a surprise when they reach The Ancient Lake of…

Berlin

By Guy Maddin | 00:01:00 | Experimental | 01/01/2008

Maddin's film incorporates found footage to provide a glimpse of wartime Berlin. Crowds of soldiers march in formation, play instruments and engage in training drills. Burning fires and a frantic pace contrast with the organized movements of the troops, perhaps foreshadowing the destructive events to come.

Souvenirs is a trio of short films (Sand and Stone, Watermarks, Waiting for the Parade) about the city of Winnipeg, which sift through the accumulated layers of history, experience and identity of a place which we, collectively, call home.
