Trash Cult Tuesdays: New York Ninja

Directed by John Liu & Kurtis Spieler
2021/1984, USA, 93 min

Taekwondo film legend John Liu stars as a New York everyman who, when pushed too far, is forced to take the law into his own hands and become “The New York Ninja” — a vigilante set on righting wrongs and keeping the peace in a Big Apple on the brink of chaos. Originally filmed in 1984, this martial arts riot was never completed and sat, unedited in a warehouse, for nearly 40 years before being finished by the staff (including a complete re-dubbing of all of the dialogue, which was lost) at Vinegar Syndrome.

Trash Cult Tuesdays is a brand-new regular screening series coming to Cinematheque Tuesdays, starting March 8.

Every Tuesday, we are presenting two trashy, cult classic films that are underseen but well-respected, and due for induction into ‘That Other Canon’ – the Hall-of-Fame for films that are beloved pieces of alternative, outsider, cult cinema. You may have seen some of them before, but never like this! Restored in HD transfers on DCP! New discoveries… old favorites… (s)exploitation… gonzo action… bizzarro sci-fi… seedy horror… this series has it all! Not all of them are *bad*, but all of them are *badass*!

The films in this series are from distributors you know and love: Severin! Arrow! Vinegar Syndrome! AGFA! Kino Lorber!

All admissions are $5. No passes.

*if there are films that you would like to see programmed in this series, check out AGFA’s Theatrical Distribution catalogue and send us some recommendations. You just may have the chance to be a Programmer in the near future!

Reviews

With shoestring production values, Liu's energetically silly fight choreography, good use of stolen locations and 35mm imagery in first-rate preservative condition, "Ninja" has cheesily entertaining elements that it combines in a very lively fashion.
- Dennis Harvey, Variety
Ninjas originated in Japan during the 15th century, but most experts agree that the artform reached its peak five centuries later in New York with the addition of roller skates.
