Sat, Nov 2 / 5 pm & 9:15 pm
Sun, Nov 3 / 7:15 pm
Directed by Coan Buddy Nichols & Rick Charnoski
2019, USA, 54 min

Skateboarding didn’t begin as a rebellious, anti-authority lifestyle activity. Tony Alva was a key figure in the early evolution from wholesome “sport” to freewheeling art form. From his humble beginnings on the streets of Santa Monica to his rise to superstardom as part of the legendary Z-Boys, the film chronicles his drug-induced implosion and ultimate rise from the ashes to serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations of skateboarders the world over.

Plays with:

Jeff Grosso’s Love Letter to Canada / 2019, USA, 39 min / A love letter to some of the many great Canadian skaters who have killed it from the 70s to today.

Skate Break / Directed by Peatr Thomas, 2019, Canada, 4 min / A young man takes a break from work, skateboarding along to see his favourite Winnipeg murals.

Reviews

The world of professional skateboarding can be divided into two eras: Before and after Tony Alva. In the pre-Alva days, professional skateboarders were clean-cut surfers with sun-bleached hair,In the mid-to-late 1970s, Tony Alva changed all that, injecting skateboarding with attitude, swagger, and a rock star wardrobe.
