Dir. Rupert Julian (Based on the novel by Gaston Leroux)
1925, USA
Starring Lon Chaney, Mary Philbin
WITH LIVE MUSIC PERFORMANCE BY QUERKUS
One of the great early silent classics of the horror genre, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA features the legendary Lon Chaney as the mysterious insane phantom who haunts the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House.
The phantom wants his protégé, Christine Daaé (Mary Philbin) to sing the role of Marguerite in Gounod’s Faust, replacing the diva Mlle. Carlotta.
“Phantom is an impressive technical tour de force, and all that makeup / cinematography supports high-quality storytelling. Lon Chaney’s Erik is memorable for more than his hideous visage; Chaney makes the character imposing and otherworldly long before we see his face, which an impressive display of acting almost entirely through body language.” Jay Seaver
ABOUT QUERKUS
Querkus is the sonic imagination of musicians Karen Asmundson and Edgar Ozolins. They blend classical piano and rock guitar with electronics and syncopated percussion to create a dark, blissful, melodramatic prog pop that has been described as “ Tori Amos and Enya having a paranoid acid trip with Jefferson Airplane.” They are finishing up a new album to be released in the Fall of 2009.
