2019, Canada, 78 min

Opening Night introduced by Fabián Velasco & Miloš Mitrovič.

This darkly comic gem featuring an all star local cast – Alex Ateah, Adam Brooks, Sam Singer, Stephanie Berrington, Miloš Mitrovič, Jennifer Mauws, Igal Rodriguez, Sandro Debari and Slobodan Mitrovic. Tapeworm explores the lives of losers and misfits who intersect in bleak Winnipeg, a city isolated and often overlooked like the offbeat characters who call it home. A sickly man in an unhappy marriage, a stand up comedian whose sets are received with indifference, a stoner couple who share only trivial exchanges and a young loner are each living lives lost in translation, detached  from their surroundings and the people around them. – VIFF

Reviews

I love this movie…it is amazing. A deadpan masterwork, mining the under-evaluated richness of the Greg Hanec-Barry Gibson strain in Winnipeg filmmaking. With touches of Caelum Vatnsdal’s wondrous Osborne Village lamentation, “Black as Hell, Strong as Death, Sweet as Love.” (1998)
- Filmmaker Matthew Rankin (Death by Popcorn, The Twentieth Century)
I couldn't have predicted it would be so oddly enjoyable....Stand out scenes include: a man-child who lives at home and plays soccer video games all day (one of the directors, Miloš Mitrovič); his mom, who is a slightly deranged home care nurse; and a Lena Dunam-esque comedienne who whose already-disappointing life turns absurdly tragic after an accident.
