CINEMATHEQUE AT HOME

Sophie Jones

Available to rent for $7.99
April 16 - May 20
Directed by Jessie Barr
2021, USA, 85 min

This title is available to rent via Cinematheque at Home for $7.99. This is not only an opportunity for our patrons to see new cinema, but is an important way that they can continue to support independent film during this pandemic with 50% of all sales supporting our theatre.

Inspired by true experiences of grief, girlhood, and growing up, Jessie Barr’s directorial debut SOPHIE JONES provides a stirring portrait of the sexual awakenings of a sixteen year old. Sophie Jones has a melancholy, yet dreamy quality with a great performance by Jessica Barr and a terrific music score by Nate Heller (Diary of Teenage Girl) Stunned by the untimely death of her mother (played by the director’s cousin Jessica Barr)  Sophie tries everything she can to feel something again, while holding herself together, in this sensitive, acutely realized, and utterly relatable coming-of-age story.

Reviews

a refreshing, deeply human meditation on girlhood, sex, and grief. A coming-of-age at its best.” “A quiet, brilliant film.
— The Playlist
You’ll find some of the same DNA in this film than we got in “Lady Bird” and “Eighth Grade...we empathize, because we care about her journey.
