When punk rock exploded in D.C. in the late 1970s, it was a mighty convergence of powerful music, inter-generational friendships, and clear minds. This groundbreaking film about punk rock in Washington DC explores its uphill battles to take root in such an unlikely city. It takes us to the heart of this musical movement that not only redefined a genre but that influenced DIY culture and political engagement around the world. Punk the Capital captures that transformative period, situating DC punk and DC harDCore within the larger narratives of rock ‘n’ roll. Featuring recently unearthed Super-8 film of bands like Bad Brains and footage of Void, Faith, Rites of Spring, Half Japanese, Black Market Baby, Tru Fax, SOA, The Enzymes, and the Insaniac and interviews with legends like Joe Keithley (D.O.A) Jello Biafra (Dead Kennedys), Henry Rollins and Ian MacKaye (Teen Idles, Minor Threat, Dischord Records).

Reviews

I was most excited for the live footage – Punk The Capital features rare, never-before-seen live video of bands including the Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Void, and more on Super-8 film shot by a slew of folks. The footage is visceral, fabulously sepia, and a fresh glimpse at live shows from forty years ago that you’re definitely not going to find on YouTube. Fantastic...
