The King of Comedy
Directed by Martin Scorsese
1982, USA, 109 min

McDonald at the Movies
Once a month, comedian and co-founder of Kids in the Hall, Kevin McDonald, will present a handpicked film from the archives of comic history.

This devastating satire of fame and celebrity features Robert De Niro in one of his finest performances as Rupert Pupkin, a nerd like comedian in his 30’s who lives with his mother and fantasizes about being famous as a stand up comedian on a late night TV talk show. He constantly haunts the offices of comedian Jerry Langford (played by Jerry Lewis) hoping to be a guest on his show. He soon comes up with a plan that will bring him a kind of fame.

Reviews

A masterpiece...which I now regard as Martin Scorsese's best feature.
-Jonathan Rosenbaum
Ahead of its time...directly influenced such groundbreaking comedies as The Larry Sanders Show and the various iterations of Alan Partridge, to say nothing of inside-showbiz comedies like Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, and BoJack Horseman.
