McDonald at the Movies: Steamboat Bill, Jr.

Wed, Sept 12 / 7 pm
Directed by Charles Reisner
1928, USA, 70 min

Once a month, comedian, star and co-founder of Kids in the Hall, comic Kevin McDonald will choose and introduce a handpicked film from the archives of comic history.

Tonight we feature the last of the legendary silent comedian Buster Keaton’s pictures where he had total control, Steamboat Bill, Jr.  The film features Keaton as William Canfield Jr., a Boston college student who returns home to reunite with his father, the riverboat captain. Together they compete with riverboat owner John James King while Willie finds himself falling for King’s daughter, Mary.

Reviews

Buster Keaton's silent comedy Steamboat Bill, Jr. displays more inspired energy and inventiveness than pretty much everything else currently in cinemas combined. - Wendy Ide, The Times Its concluding 15-minute showstopper is a high watermark in imaginative, exhilarating entertainment. Audiences or lone viewers are more apt to open their mouths in astonishment. - Bill Weber, Slant
