As a general introduction to SPFX, sculpting, moldmaking and prosthetics, learn how to make your own dentures with SPFX artist Brendan Murphy.
Participants will cast their teeth and learn what positives are, as well as correct industry terms that are used while creating molds. Participants are taught what compounds and materials are required, introduced to safe and proper usage of these materials as well as correct artist safety in a shared artist space. All participants will sculpt referenced teeth they will be asked to bring in on these positives. Once the sculpture is deemed complete, Brendan will help each participant set up their mold and then mold. The mold will dry during the lunch break (lunch not included), and participants will demould after the break and correct the dentures together. Once the pieces are corrected, participants will move onto painting using alcohol paints and a sealer to finish off the pieces. They will require one day of drying before putting the teeth back into your mouth. This is a one day class in which all participants go home with a finished piece at the end of the day!
Instructor Bio:
Brendan Murphy is a special effects makeup artist from Winnipeg who studied In Vancouver for 6 years before coming back to Winnipeg to start his own Special Effects shop. Creating fake limbs, prosthetic makeups and monsters are all part of a day’s work.
A love for film has also caused him to make his own films that highlight his transformative abilities. Brendan has so far worked in 4 continents and continues to work in the film industry today. With a lack of educators for special effects in the prairies, Brendan hopes to provide other artists the opportunity to learn the trade without having to relocate to Vancouver or Toronto.
Volunteering for the local Fire Stations in Vancouver, Brendan routinely practiced his prosthetic makeup skills by helping simulate rescues for firefighters. He has also sponsored many film competitions in Vancouver such as Blood N Guts and the SFF. In 2017 Brendan attended the Frames film program and Worked with Drive- Youth Employment services. He then went on to study medical prosthetics and orthotics as well as leather working at Myrdal Orthopedic.
Brendan has Worked for Masters FX, Lindala Shminken FX, WCT productions, Iatse 891, Marvel and Paramount Pictures. He is now working to become a Permittee in Winnipeg’s Local Union, Iatse 856 while also running an artist collective in Elmwood to help local artists build their own companies.
