Are you interested in Documentary Filmmaking? Do you want to learn the process of getting a documentary from the ground to the big screen? Sign up for this two day introductory course to the world of Documentary film. The class will cover all the basics needed to succeed in the documentary film world.

The class will be taught by very talented documentary filmmaker JJ Neepin.  JJ Neepin is an indigenous filmmaker living and working in Winnipeg, with her sister/producer Justina Neepin, they have created many short films with their company JJNeepinFilms INC. JJ has written and directed several documentary shorts that have screened at film festivals around the world, including her CBC short doc Headdress at the 2017 Hot Docs and Bayline at imagineNATIVE in Toronto. She has directed several episodes of APTN’s Taken, a true crime series profiling the missing and murdered indigenous women of Canada.

Course Overview: 

Day 1 – Back to Basics
• Is that a good idea?
• Story Structure applied to Documentaries
• You still need a script!
• Characters – real people
• Interviews
• Documentary genres and formats
• Short film vs feature
• Pitch your story!

Day 2 – Start to Finish
• The timeline of a documentary process
• Pre-Production: Research, Funding, and paperwork
• Production: Footage and interviews
• Post-Production: Transcribing, editing and more paperwork
• Distribution

Students will be asked to bring an idea or subject they want to possibly do a documentary
about. Class will begin promptly at 7pm.

-The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.
