Facebook Live Q&A with Helen Shaver (director), Pamela Mala Sinha (screenwriter/“Rosemary”), Clark Backo (“Samira”), and Sheila McCarthy (“Joyce”) on Tuesday, October 27th at 2pm moderated by Shelagh Carter: https://www.facebook.com/wfgcinematheque/live

Happy Place is the feature debut of acclaimed actress Helen Shaver (Desert Hearts, The L Word, Who Has Seen The Wind) with a script from former Winnipegger Pamela Mala Sinha. The film is a tough, poignant drama exploring how a group of women spend time together in an in-patient care facility. Pamela Mala Sinha used her own life experiences to adapt into a film from this stage play and appears in a supporting role. The women have only one thing in common: they have all attempted suicide. Samira’s (Clark Backo) attempt stems from PTSD after a violent sexual assault several years earlier. Her fellow residents – such as foul-mouthed Mildred (Mary Walsh), highly vulnerable Nina (Liisa Repo-Martell), and hyper-competitive Joyce (Shelia McCarthy) – have personal stories that intersect with her own. A makeshift community takes shape. Some of the women will leave the clinic’s safety, for better or worse, and others will stay, hopefully learning to find a way to exist alongside their pain.

Reviews

I suspect that many seeing this superb and masterful film will find themselves in tears when “The End” finally flickers onto the screen.
