Directed by Costa-Gavras
1969, France / Algeria, 127 min

An Oscar-winning film in 1970. In a fragile democracy where the police and the military are set on eradicating the political left, a member of the parliamentary opposition is murdered in the street after leading a pacifist meeting. The official inquiry into the case is entrusted to a young judge who becomes aware that this was a political crime committed by two hired killers. To entangle things further, an ambitious journalist resorts to unorthodox means to pile up evidence against several members of an extreme right-wing party, while these in turn accuse police and army high officials.

Alliance Française du Manitoba is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to teaching and promoting French and its diverse culture. Reviews

Costa-Gavras’s 1969 political assassination thriller Z appeared at the end of a decade of burgeoning cultural change and rampant paranoia. In the United States, this Algerian-French coproduction sparked a sensation...perfectly capturing a global mood of apprehension at a moment when America was at its most vulnerable. Costa-Gavras expresses the tension and terror of political conspiracy that haunted the democratic and anti-war movements of the sixties—and still does.
