Learn the step by step basics of creating a documentary film with documentary filmmaker Jim Agapito. Jim Agapito has previously worked with APTN, CBC and NFB.

Day 1 – June 21st

Elements of a documentary
– documentary language and audience experience
– what makes a documentary
– categories of a documentary

Evidence and POV of a documentary
– presenting evidence
– “credibility”
– doc as an argument
– audience as the jury
– relationship of mic and camera in documentary
– POV and multiple POV
– Authors POV – Personal, reflexive, self reflexive

Time, Structure and Development
– Three act structure
– Syncratic vs idiosyncratic
– cutting up dialogue

Author Challenges and Dilemmas
– relationship between subject and form
– controlling the “world”
– ethics

Exercise – Analysis of Style, Structure, Directors Vision

Developing Story Ideas (if participants don’t already have an idea they’d like to workshop)
– Recognizing the director’s artistic identity
– Developing Your Story Idea
– Proposal Organizer (how to fill one)
– Pitching the idea
– Putting a pitch package together
– Subject Driven vs Character Driven Doc
– Raising Story Stakes
– The artistic process (losing your way then coming back home)

Day 2 – June 22

Screencraft
– The relationship between Camera and Editor
– The relationship between Director and Editor
– Documentary composition, editing and lighting. Polished vs unpolished
– Shooting in class exercises and demonstration (tripod/handheld Shooting, sound, camera handling)
– Interview techniques
– Mock Pitch Session
– Going over proposal organizer of participants

-The Winnipeg Film Group reserves the right to cancel any course where the minimum registration has not been met. Anyone registered for a course that has been cancelled is eligible for a full refund, Cancelled course fees may also be used towards any other Winnipeg Film Group training programs.
