Cinematheque at Home: The Grey Fox

Plays April 10 - 24
Directed by Phillip Borsos
1982, Canada, 110 min
4K restoration

A new restoration of the classic Canadian Western based on a true story. Bill Miner (Richard Farnsworth) is a fearless stagecoach robber in the days of the Wild West. After he is arrested and jailed for more than 30 years, he re-emerges into a new century and a bustling new world. Attempting to live the straight and narrow path, he is inspired to take up his old criminal ways after seeing The Great Train Robbery. Soon he pulls off a successful railway heist and goes on the lam in British Columbia, where he falls for bold photographer Katherine Flynn (Jackie Burroughs). But Miner was not built for settling down.

Plays with Nails / Directed by Phillip Borsos, 1979, Canada, 13 min / This Oscar-nominated documentary short tracks the shift in the relationship of an individual to his work between the 19th century and today. Focusing on how nails are made, we first see a blacksmith laboring at his forge, shaping nails from single strands of steel rods. The scene then shifts from this peaceful setting to the roar of a 20th century nail mill, where banks of machines draw, cut, and pound the steel rods faster than the eye can follow.

Cinematheque at Home – curated by the Cinematheque – will offer new theatrical releases to our audience every week through Vimeo on Demand. Cinematheque at Home will offer new programs (individual feature films and/or shorts programs) each week, which our audiences can pay to stream through our website. This is not only an opportunity for our patrons to see new cinema, but is an important way that they can continue to support independent film during this pandemic.

Reviews

Here’s one of the loveliest adventures of the year. The director, Phillip Borsos, is able to make this a human story and still keep it exciting as an action picture.
