Cinematheque at Home: Cranks

Plays May 8 - 22
Directed by Ryan McKenna
2019, Canada, 94 min

Livestream Q&A with director Ryan McKenna on our Facebook page on Sunday, May 17 at 3pm!

An incredible new work from the director of The First Winter and The Heart of Madame Sabali. A city symphony focused on several different characters living in the sleepy, isolated town of Winnipeg. The film emulates the aesthetic of a photo album – each new scene a black & white tableau vivant of a new character and setting. Connecting the various characters are the letters they wrote, very odd ones, to Peter Warren, legendary host of the infamous Action Line, a radio program broadcast throughout Canada from 1971-1998. Cranks explores how journalists like Peter Warren, who pioneered an accusatory and belligerent style of reporting, and his angry way of tackling issues has trickled down in our culture, affecting and emboldening real lives.

Cinematheque at Home – curated by the Cinematheque – will offer new theatrical releases every week which our audiences can pay to stream through our website (by clicking the ‘buy tickets’ button). This is not only an opportunity for our patrons to see new cinema, but is an important way that they can continue to support independent film during this pandemic.

Reviews

Like fellow Winnipeg filmmakers Guy Maddin and Matthew Rankin, McKenna continues to make distinctly unique films.
- Andrew Duchesne, La Presse
A testament to Winnipeg's deep seated weirdness.
- Curtis Woloschuk, Vancouver International Film Festival
