Canada’s Top Ten: Mean Dreams

Fri, Mar 31 / 9:15 pm
Sat, Apr 1 / 3 pm
Directed by Nathan Morlando
2016, Canada, 104 min

The second feature from Nathan Morlando more than delivers on the promise of his debut Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster which won Best Canadian Feature at TIFF in 2011. The life of teenaged Jonas is dominated by his father’s struggle to keep the family afloat. When Casey moves in down the road, the two click immediately. But while most parents would be happy to see their children find this kind of relationship, Jonas’ father sees Casey as a distraction while Casey’s father Wayne (Bill Paxton), an alcoholic police detective, sees Jonas as competition.

Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival – Now in its 16th year, Canada’s Top Ten Film Festival highlights the best features, shorts, and student shorts from across the country. The breadth of programming selected by  filmmakers, programmers, critics, and industry professionals represents the creative strength of the country’s best cinema.

Reviews

A poetic tale of backwoods crime with first-rate performances… [the film] hails from the Terrence Malick playbook of alienated souls roaming about gorgeous natural scenery…Mean Dreams has been described by its director as ‘Northern Gothic,’ an apt label for a movie that transforms Malick’s lyricism into thriller material…
