Burst City (New Restoration)

Sun, Oct 17 / 4pm
Directed by Gakuryû Ishii
1982, Japan, 115 min
Japanese with English subtitles

We’re teaming up with Tiny & Mean’s Record Swap for a mini sale in the Artspace lobby from 12pm – 4pm, including records, tapes, shirts and all sorts of evil oddities. Buy some records and stay for Gakuryû Ishii’s 1982 punk film, Burst City

This dystopian Molotov cocktail of Mad Max-style biker wars against the yakuza and performances from real-life Japanese punk bands (The Stalin, The Roosters, The Rockers and INU) thrust underground wunderkind Sogo Ishii to the next level, and is an early landmark in cyberpunk cinema. In a derelict industrial wasteland on the outskirts of Tokyo, two rival bands and their unruly mobs of fans gather for a Battle of the Bands-style protest against a nuclear power plant, bringing them face-to-face with the yakuza industrialists that want to erase their turf.

Reviews

Burst City is one of those films that isn't for everybody but should be, an explosion of kinetic energy in cinematic form, and is two hours well-spent in an era when our time is so very precious.
