Aurora Gorealis: The Fly

Sat, Oct 30 / 3pm
Directed by David Cronenberg
1986, Canada/USA/UK, 96 min

When scientist Seth Brundle (Jeff Goldblum) completes his teleportation device, he decides to test its abilities on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a housefly slips in during the process, leading to a merger of man and insect. Initially, Brundle appears to have undergone a successful teleportation, but the fly’s cells begin to take over his body. As he becomes increasingly fly-like, Brundle’s girlfriend (Geena Davis) is horrified as the person she once loved deteriorates into a monster.

Aurora Gorealis returns for one-night only this Halloween! Join us on Saturday, October 30 for a Canadian horror marathon featuring creepy phone calls, botched science experiments, zombie plagues and evil kids. This series pairs classic Canuxploitation offerings with Canadian shorts in a hair-raising sampling of northern frights.

Reviews

Top tier Cronenberg. This is the start of the auteur's shift into accessible, mainstream Hollywood fare, but it still maintains his interest in damaged men and weird scientists. What surprises most is how affecting the love story is.
- Joe Lipsett, Horror Queers Podcast
What makes The Fly such a stunning piece of obsessive film making is the way Cronenberg deftly allows us to identify with his monstrous creation.
