Architecture+Design Film Festival: Kevin Roche: The Quiet Architect

Sat, Apr 21 / 9 pm
Directed by Mark Noonan
2017, Ireland, 82 min

At age 95, Pritzker Prize-winning, Irish-American architect Kevin Roche is an enigma. A student of Mies van der Rohe, colleague of Eero Saarinen, and long time partner of John Dinkeloo, Roche has long performed at the pinnacle of his profession, all the while eschewing celebrity. Despite a lifetime of acclaimed work, this living legend keeps looking forward.

The Architecture+Design Film Festival (adff.ca) is co-presented by the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation and Cinematheque and is sponsored by Canada Council, Manitoba Association of Architects, University of Manitoba and Urban Idea.

Sponsored by 1X1 architecture.

Reviews

It would be impossible to contemplate post-war architecture without referencing Kevin Roche. Aged 95, the Dublin-born, Mitchelstown-raised, so-called starchitect has made a huge impact in his field with appositely huge projects. For decades, Roche has been the go-to guy for multinational headquarters, having built campuses for Santander, Ford and John Deere, among others. (His sole Irish work is Dublin’s hotly-contested Convention Centre.)
