A Vision at The Margins: Life Classes

Sat, May 13 / 7 pm
FREE ADMISSION
Directed by William D. MacGillivray
1988, Canada, 117 min

Introduced by Bill MacGillivray.

Life Classes does a wonderful thing: it takes a premise, well-worn one even in 1987 – the unmarried pregnant young woman quitting her hometown to have her baby and start a new life – and rejuvenates it. Mary leaves her boyfriend Earl and her Cape Breton hometown for Halifax. Here she meets other women who will help her transform her sense of self. Through his heroine’s connections with her own and other marginal Maritime cultures, MacGillivray creates a generous and gentle comic drama that encompasses past and present, interior and exterior space, artisanal skill and technological reach.

Life Classes was recently honored as one of the top 40 Canadian features of 150 essential moving image works selected by the Toronto International Film Festival of Canada’s legacy of 150 films.

This screening is offered for FREE as part of Canada on Screen, a yearlong celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday.

Canada on Screen is a co-production between TIFF and three core project partners — Library and Archives Canada, the Cinémathèque québécoise, and The Cinematheque in Vancouver — for Canada’s sesquicentennial in 2017. Beginning in January and running throughout the year, this free programme will present moving-image installations, special events and guests, an extensive online catalogue, and screenings across the country, all based on a list of 150 essential moving-image works from Canada’s history, and compiled through a national poll of industry professionals.
