Our Filmmaking Essentials series are designed for those who have some experience in filmmaking (either through our Basic Workshop or similar experience) and are ready to take the next step in the development of their careers.

SCRIPT WRITING: Writing Your First Feature Script

Have you written short films and now you feel ready to write your first feature? Or have you attempted to write a screenplay only to end up confused and frustrated? This workshop will take you from start to finish through the screenwriting process. Participants must bring a NEW story idea which they will develop throughout the class. Five evening classes over 2 1/2 months.

About Danishka Esterhazy: Manitoba filmmaker Danishka Esterhazy uses a haunting visual style to create stories that examine barriers to human intimacy. She is a graduate of the Director’s Labprogram at the Canadian Film Centre and the NSI's features first program, and has written and directed several short films. Esterhazy was the recipient of the prestigious 2008 Kodak New Vision Mentorship Award, sponsored by WIFT Toronto and Kodak Canada, which is presented annually to one exceptional female filmmaker.

ACTING FOR DIRECTORS

This extraordinary workshop provides indispensible techniques and new insight to give directors confidence and develop your "eye". This workshop for directors is set up as part acting class, part directing class with each participant engaging in exercises using acting techniques. Techniques learned in classes will be applied to two-person scenes with professional actors.

Date: Six evening classes, 7 PM to 10 PM: Oct 15, 16, 22, 23, 19 and 30

About Darcy Fehr: Darcy Fehr is easily one of Winnipeg's most recognizable actors through his consistent, decade-long professional relationship with Guy Maddin, having work on Hospital Fragment, Cowards Bend the Knee, The Saddest Music in the World, Odin's Shield Maiden, and My Winnipeg. Darcy has worked on countless film and stage projects, including for productions of the Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Prairie Theatre Exchange.

DIRECTING ACTORS: How to Personalize Direction

Participants of this unique workshop will learn how to engage actors in ways which are exciting for both director and actor, how to evaluate performance and, after providing good direction, what to do if it simply isn't working - even though it should! This class provides participants with the opportunity to work with actors for two sessions and to learn techniques which can be used throughout rehearsal, on set or in audition.

Date: Three evenings and one Saturday class; Nov 3, 5 and 7 - 7PM to 10 PM and Nov 8 - 10AM to 4 PM* (the saturday session is being held in collarboration with the Academy of Acting and the Saturday class will be held at the Academy of Acting Studio)

About Jeffrey Erbach: Jeffrey Erbach is one of the most notable filmmakers who emerged in the late 1990's in Winnipeg, known for his exceptional cinematographic style and controversial content that came to define the Winnipeg Film Group's evolving 'aesthetic' a decade ago. His first feature film The Nature of Nicholas (2002), was released to much acclaim on the international festival circuit.

EDITING 101: New and Improved!

Through this workshop participants will learn the basics of editing including set-up, logging& capturing, editing tools, edit workflow, and how to sync sound and image. Participants will be introduced to editing in a hands-on setting and will have the opportunity to work at individual Final Cut Pro stations together in pairs. This new improved Editing 101 will allow participants to gain the valuable hands-on experience necessary to comfortably navigate FCP. Participants are encouraged to bring footage that they may have already if any. Participants are also welcome to bring their hard drives or laptops for use during the class.

Date: Three sessions - Sat Nov 20 (10 AM to 4 PM); Sun Nov 21 (12 NOON to 4 PM) and Mon Nov 22 (6 PM to 10 PM)

Participants: 8 Maximum - Class is FULL!
Prerequisite: A basic understanding of how to use a computer; if you are not yet comfortable with computers, we recommend you obtain basic computer training prior to registering for this workshop

About Jaimz Asmundson: Jaimz has been experimenting with film, video and electronic music since the age of 15. Since then, he has continued to produce a body of work that has been screened internationally. His films have become known for their subversive content. He is a member of the WNDX curatorial collective, undertaking programming for the WNDX festival and has served as a shorts programmer for the Gimli Film Festival. Aside from his own films, he has served as editor for other filmmakers' works.
