EXPERIMENTAL SERIES: THE 16MM FILM EXPERIMENT

Wondering what to do this winter? Not anymore - you're making an experimental 16mm film with award winning filmmaker, Mike Maryniuk.

Under the tutelage of Maryniuk and filmmaker, Aaron Zeghers, you will learn how to use the Bolex camera, lighting techniques, hand-processing negatives and giving 'em the ol' tint & tone! The goal of this workshop is for all participants to complete a 16mm short experimental film by the end of the timeline.

  • Shoot Your Film, February 10 – March 16 
  • Processing Class – Saturday, March 17, 10am – 6pm
  • Process Your Film, March 17 – March 19 
  • Tint N’ Tone & Steenbeck Workshop, Saturday, March 24, 10am – 6pm
  • Open Session Tint N’ Tone & Editing Your Film at WFG Production Centre – March 24 – May 5

Participants Will Receive:

  • 300 feet of 16 mm film (12 ISO film Kodak 3374)
  • Studio use for one day
  • $150 use of lighting gear
  • Bolex film camera rental
  • Dates: Thu Feb 9, 7pm – 10pm, Sat Mar 17, 10am – 6pm, Sat Mar 24, 10am – 6pm
  • Fee: Members $229, Non-Members $299* (non-member fee includes one year Basic membership)

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS:

Mike Maryniuk was born in Winnipeg, but raised in the rural back country of Manitoba. A completely self-taught film virtuoso, Maryniuk’s film world is an inventive hybrid of Jim Henson, Norman McLaren and Stan Brakhage. Maryniuk is also a product of the 16mm experimental workshop. He has made numerous films in the class over past years, using a wide variety of techniques.  His films have played around the world including, Fish Arms, Tattoo Step and Cattle Call. Most recently, his film, The Yodeling Farmer, premiered at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. http://vimeo.com/user3851714

Aaron Zeghers is a hardworking, yet playful Capricorn who has enjoyed filmmaking for both creative and commercial purposes the past three years. He is also strums bass guitar for local band, Sit Down, Tracy. Last year, Aaron worked as a Digital Media Technician for two features shot in Winnipeg (Keyhole; Passionflower), as well as an editor on many other projects. Additionally, Aaron was DOP on the short film, The Shoemaker and is currently in production for his upcoming film, Winnipeg 2019. http://vimeo.com/aaronzeghers
