Overview

In a time when the affordability of digital media has made a filmmaker of everyone, and many young filmmakers turn to low-cost means of honing their skills, it is important to recognize the immense artistic heritage of documentary film and learn from the great stalwarts of the genre as to what separates a passable documentary from a great, lasting work of art.

Master classes and panels will explore current challenges as well as provide innovative professional development. Workshops will provide participants with an in-depth experience, from developing story structure for documentary to cutting edge new technologies. Screenings will honour those whose films have had a lingering impact on the world's cinematic landscape.

Award-winning filmmakers included in our program include Steve James (Hoop Dreams), Nettie Wild (Fix: The Story of an Addicted City), Zacharias Kunuk (Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner), Les Blank (Burden of Dreams), Kirby Dick (This Film is Not Yet Rated), Yung Chang (Director, Up The Yangtze), Daniel Cross (Producer, Up The Yangtze), Allan King (Warrendale), and more.

In addition, acclaimed director Albert Maysles (Grey Gardens) will provide an exclusive video introduction to precede a rare 35mm screening of his film Gimme Shelter, and controversial “mockumentary” pioneer Peter Watkins (The War Game) will provide an exclusive essay for this conference that will be the focal point of a round table discussion.
