ANDY SMETANKA: THE MISSOULA SORCERER

Writer, musician, silhouette artist and stop motion animator Andy Smetanka started making Super 8 movies in 2002 after an inspiring trip to Winnipeg, and since 2004 has been working chiefly in animated silhouettes. His work can be seen in the music videos of The Decemberists, and in the 2007 Guy Maddin documentary feature My Winnipeg for which he was tasked with recreating episodes from that city's history.
As a guest visiting artist he will introduce a program of his remarkable animated shorts and a special screening of My Winnipeg and deliver a Master Class in Silouette Animation.
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Andy Smetanka has lived in Minnesota, Montana, Finland and Sweden for a total of 40 years. In the pre-digital era, he published six issues of Shat Upon, a smudgy fanzine of record for the Missoula, MT rock scene from 1995-1999. He is currently shooting a Missoula silhouette animation and preparing figures for his silhouette XXX erotic debut. Smetanka, his wife Joanna and their two boys are live-in caretakers on the Moon-Randolph Homestead in the grassy hills north of Missoula.
